Today's Youth vis-a-vis the Youth of Yesteryears

The youth today is more fortunate and immensely techno-savvy than the youth of yesteryears. The latest gadgets or equipment in technology are available for entertainment, education or what have you, be they smartphones, laptop, tablet, etc. so forth and so on, everything money can buy. Such modern tools have made life so easy and comfortable as well as practically no sweat as they say.

Music or movies can be available without leaving the confines of homes or braving the overbearing heat of the vehicular traffic. For students, they have the Internet to access

for whatever research they need for all their subjects anytime of the day at the comfort of their homes. To hone their competitive edge, various e-games or on-line role playing games can be accessed from the Internet either at the friendly neighborhood i-cafes or via home Internet connection. Furthermore, communication with anyone in the family or circle of friends here and abroad is exceedingly quick for a matter of seconds either through mobile phones or landlines as well as e-mail for longish messages, be it personal or business.

Despite the overwhelming benefits that the modern technological inventions and innovations at the fingertips of today's youth, there seems to be a downside dragging them down performance-wise in both physical and mental capability. There are many reports of numerous parents complaining of truancy and deteriorating school grades among students in elementary and secondary education which are attributed to virtual addiction to Internet gaming. Thus, many local government units have passed ordinances which limit or strictly monitor the daily operations of i-cafes.

The youth of yesteryears were technologically handicapped so much as compared to today's youth. For communications, snail mail, telegram and telephone were the only means available while the radio, the television, mostly black and white, and the cinemas provided entertainment. Yet, somehow, the thrills and unrestrained exuberance of many physically exhausting games indulged in the past have eluded the interest of today's youth.

Patintero and Taguang  Pung (hide and seek) were the favorite games especially when the weather was fine and the full moon fully illuminated the streets. However, if the weather was uncooperative, indoor pastimes were Sungka and Bugtungan (riddles) or the occasional jam sessions where dancing with the current musical hits was the preference then.

Another favorite was the cook-out event where the group contributed saba bananas or cassava roots which, after boiling, would be pounded finely with brown sugar and shredded young coconuts. The finished product would be partaken with gusto by the group amidst some ribbings and exchanging of sweet nothings among lovey-doveys.

Of course, the aforementioned activities may not be appealing to today's youth who will prefer the sedentary and impersonal cyber games. Still, today's youth indeed have missed the exceptionally exhilarating games which the youth of yesteryears had found immensely fulfilling and unforgettable as attested to by this blogger.
